Cape disappointment

After leaving the campground we headed back toward the ocean. We stopped quick at a tourist trap for some miscellaneous smoked salmon and berry items. Then we took the ferry. This is the last ferry operating across the Columbia river. It was a fun little attraction but we just went over and back.

We eventually made it to Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark spent their second winter. It was neat to learn about them here and there were a lot of references to Mandan.

Next we went to our campsite at cape disappointment. We were right on the ocean!  Here we celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary.

The kids built a driftwood fort in our campsite and we enjoyed exploring the beach. Lots of digging, lots of sand and a couple of light houses. Everyone had fun!

We visited the L&C interpretive center on the north side of the river on Thursday morning. This was a nice museum which walks you through the journey. We then took a walk on the jetty. The US army corps of engineers built this to help make the mouth of the Columbia river more navigatable. One person may have broken a rib. I guess we will see how that plays out in a few days.

Finally we drove north to Olympic national park. Lots of driving on the coast through the rainforest. We look forward to exploring tomorrow.
